SMART Releases Major Upgrade to SMART Board Software for Mac
CALGARY, Alberta (PRWEB) January 11, 2006
SMART Technologies Inc. announced at Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco the launch of SMART Board™ software 9.5 for the Mac OS X operating system. Version 9.5 introduces new features to help educators create, organize and implement interactive lessons using the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. New features include a Gallery keyword search, audio and video support, and more curriculum-based content.
The new Gallery keyword search helps teachers quickly find content. Virtually all types of content, including images, audio, video, Macromedia® Flash® and Notebook™ files, can be organized and stored in the Gallery. The Gallery has expanded to include My Content, which is a personal workspace; SMART Gallery content, which can be shared on a school network; and an online resource section, allowing teachers to make the most of Internet resources, either their own or SMART’s. Version 9.5 is a free upgrade for SMART Board interactive whiteboard customers.
SMART Board software 9.5 also features thousands of objects in the Gallery, including over 500 new images, backgrounds, audio, video and Flash files. It also contains digital content from content providers, including Intel® Skoool™, Espresso Education and Daydream Education.
“The improvements in SMART Board software make it even more classroom friendly because I can now move toolbars, use mathematical symbols, immediately access the Gallery and easily make changes on the fly in front of students,” says Barbara Post, a math teacher at Santiago High School, Garden Grove, CA. “I have been using my SMART Board with my Mac computer for over a year and a half and don’t think I could teach with out it.”
“SMART is committed to the Mac platform and to our Mac user base,” says Nancy Knowlton, SMART’s president and co-CEO. “SMART Board software 9.5 represents a significant upgrade that adds and enhances features teachers have asked for.”
New Features
Notebook software
Gallery search: Teachers can save time and increase productivity by easily finding content using the keyword search or browsing through the content file structure.
Online resources: Teachers can easily access SMART-hosted lesson activities, curriculum standards and online classroom resources, or any online content through the Gallery.
Video and audio support: Teachers can integrate video and audio files seamlessly into Notebook software lesson activities. Like other objects in Notebook software, videos can be resized, rotated, written over and stored in the Gallery. Audio files can be attached to objects or can be objects themselves.
Linking: Teachers can create easy-to-use, nonlinear lessons by linking objects to pages in a Notebook file, a URL, an attached document or any document on the hard drive.
Locking: Objects can be locked in three ways. They can be locked in place, locked so they can be moved but not edited, or locked so they can be rotated and moved, but not edited.
Customizable toolbar: Icons can be added to or removed from the Notebook software toolbar.
Improved text support: Subscript, superscript and scientific symbols are now supported in Notebook software. Text can also be added to shapes.
Mirror objects: Objects can be flipped horizontally and vertically.
Gallery learning objects: The Gallery includes thousands of objects, including over 500 new images, audio, video, Flash and Notebook software lesson activities.
SMART Board Tools
Freehand Screen Capture: Teachers can outline and capture any shape or part of the screen with the Screen Capture tool.

Baltimore Smart Homes Partners with Local Charter School to Increase Energy Efficiency
Cockeysville, MD (PRWEB) January 24, 2011
Baltimore Smart Homes was hired by the Southwest Baltimore Charter School (SBCS) to perform an energy audit and develop a strategy for energy savings and sustainability.
Smart Homes initially performed a pro bono sustainability study as part of a collaborative program with a local architecture firm. “This is an exciting new venture for us,” says Rebecca Rundle, Vice President of Baltimore Smart Homes, “we really believe in this school’s vision of teaching by doing.”
The Smart Homes team first met with school officials and facility personnel to establish a base line for the building’s energy consumption. Next, the team did a walk through of the building, evaluating the envelope components including the foundation, roof, walls, doors and windows. The heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems were also evaluated as well as the lighting and other energy consumption areas such as the kitchen. Smart Homes will also review historical energy consumption to factor into their recommendations.
Erika Brockman, Executive Director of SBCS says Baltimore Smart Homes, “was a thoughtful and professional island of creative energy. [The] staff took great care with the sustainability study and guided us through the complicated energy audit.”
The preliminary analysis shows a number of upgrades needed in lighting, heating and cooling units. Rundle says, “this is the start of a strong collaborative with the school. It will take months and years for them to make all of the improvements necessary.” Smart Homes is available not just for the audit, but to work with the school to make the necessary improvements and upgrades to make the facility more energy efficient. In addition, Smart Homes provides training and education to the maintenance staff of SBCS.
SBCS is a public charter school educating students from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. A presentation is being planned for the spring to involve the middle school science students in the Club UMB program. The presentation will cover the basics of the energy audit process and how it works.

Lilburn, GA (PRWEB) October 3, 2008
Michael Wilkes, twenty-five year automation veteran and bona fide lazy person has launched BestTimeTools.com, a collection of time saving tools and tips designed to help businesses and consumers win back their valuable time. The new site includes a free monthly newsletter that will bring new time saving tools and tips to subscribers.
As Wilkes’ software design company Dynamic Answers passed the ten year mark, he realized that his friends really appreciated the free advice he gave on software and gadgets that saved them time. Sometimes it was a tool like X1 or a service like Jott and sometimes it was an insider’s tip on how to use something they already had, like Control+semicolon to enter today’s date into Microsoft Access.
So he decided to collect the time saving tools and tips into one place – something he could easily share with people who wanted to be more productive. Wilkes comes by this passion for automation naturally. His mother once remarked that he would “Spend 30 minutes figuring out how to do a 10 minute job in 5 minutes.”
“I have long believed that time is our most precious commodity and any time saving tools and tips that I can find are valuable to me. When I figured out that others felt the same way, it gave birth to an organized collection for the public to use,” says Wilkes.
People can save anywhere from a few minutes to many days with the time saving tools and tips at BestTimeTools.com. Booking a flight, hotel, and car together, for example, saves not just money but also time. Likewise, ordering replacement ink cartridges by mail saves time in the car, wasted gas, and standing in line.
For more information on these time saving tools and tips visit http://www.BestTimeTools.com
About BestTimeTools.com
BestTimeTools.com is a one-stop shopping destination for time saving tools and tips. This portal for products and time saving advice is a property of Volharden, Inc., the second company started by Michael Wilkes.

Answer by Chee How
I personally believe mother Theresa is the greatest humanist in this world for over forty years, she ministered to the needs of the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying of Calcutta and awarded a Nobel Peace award in 1971. She is someone who deserve more than she give to this world.

Question by kuwaizair: how much effort should be put into saving feral horses?
I go and post on sites, that have a lot of animal fans and young people. a lot of them love animals like Mustangs, and want to make it their life’s effort to save and protect.
although I have a pet cat and enjoy him, I do realize this species is not native to the USA, like the majestic, important mustang.
so, as a “wild breed” should feral horses be saved, and preserved? they aren’t doing as much damage, as the fox in Australia. there s just a part of me who goes “so what? they caught some feral, hard to tame horses and turned them into food, it’s not like they are native to America.
how can one make an argument against this? “it’s our heritage”
how does one not look like a jerk, while still going “the wild Abaco horses don’t need to be saved”
1) i thought I had enough comma
2) it’s good to see, people wanting to protect a species, even if it could be wiping out another.
good thing Horses aren’t killing off other animals, like all the other human error of invasive species

Answer by Kendra
well first please use commas correctly
all animals should be preserved and protected, native to an area or not, humans are the ones that brought them to their new environment anyway.

Interesting Story – Check it Out: Are people from Mexico the hardest working people on the planet?
Men Laden With Tea, Sichuan Sheng, China [1908] Ernest H. Wilson [RESTORED]

Entitled: Men Laden With Tea Sichuan Sheng China JUL [1908] EH Wilson [RESTORED] Very little retouching except for a few scratches and spots. Minor contrast and sepia tone added. The original resides in Harvard University Library’s permanent collection, and can be found using their Visual Information Access (VIA) Search System by using the title.
Ernest Henry "Chinese" Wilson was an explorer botanist who traveled extensively to the far east between 1899 and 1918, collecting seed specimens and recording with both journals and camera. About sixty Asian plant species bear his name. One of his most famous photographs (above) has repeatedly been mistakenly attributed to another legendary botanist (Joseph Rock) who was also working in Asia.
From Wilson’s personal notations (with misspellings as is):
"Men laden with ‘Brick Tea’ for Thibet. One man’s load weighs 317 lbs. Avoird. The other’s 298 lbs. Avoird.!! Men carry this tea as far as Tachien lu accomplishing about 6 miles per day over vile roads, 5000 ft."
I suspect that Wilson made a mistake; either miscalculating a conversion from Chinese Imperial to European weight measure, or that he believed an inflated figure offered him by a less than honest native. However, others purportedly shared the same beliefs that some porters did in fact, carry upwards of 300 pound loads. In a rare 2003 interview with several retired former porters, still alive and in their 80′s. They stated that while the average was really more between 60-110 Kg; they acknowledged that some (only the very strongest) could shoulder a superhuman 150 Kg load; someone like Giant Chang Woo Gow, or one of his kin, perhaps? An excerpt about that interview:
"The Burden of Human Portage
As recently as the first decades of the 20th century, much of the tea transported by the ancient Tea-Horse Road was carried not by mule caravan, but by human porters, giving real substance to the once widely-employed designation ‘coolie’, a term thought to have been derived from the Chinese kuli or ‘bitter labour’. This was particularly true of smaller tracks and trails leading from remote tea-picking areas to the arterial Tea-Horse routes, both in Yunnan and in Sichuan. Perhaps because this human portage played a less economically significant role than the large – sometimes huge – yak, pony and mule caravans, and perhaps because there is little or no romance attached to the piteous sight of over-burdened, inadequately-clad and under-nourished porters hauling themselves and their massive loads across muddy valleys and freezing mountain passes, less information is available to us concerning tea porters than about tea caravans.
Fortunately some black-and-white images of these incredibly wiry, tough, hard-bitten men have come down to us from Sichuan, as well as at least one 150-year-old French-made lithograph from Yunnan, in addition to some rare oral accounts describing the immense difficulties these hardy wretches had to face. In the latter category, as recently as 2003 China Daily carried an interview with four former tea porters in Ganxipo Village, near Tianquan County to the southwest of Ya’an. Now in their 80s, these veterans recall hard times before the completion of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway in 1954 when they would carry almost impossibly heavy loads of Sichuan Pu’er tea over a narrow mountain trail across the freezing heights of Erlang Shan (‘Two Wolves Mountain’) to Luding and onwards, across the Dadu River, to the tea distribution centre at Kangding.
According to 81-year-old former tea porter Li Zhongquan, tea was carried by human portage all the way from Tianquan County to Kangding, a distance of 180km (112 miles) each way on narrow mountain tracks, much of the way at dangerously high altitudes in freezing temperatures. According to Li, an able-bodied porter would carry 10 to 12 packs of tea, each weighing between 6 and 9 kg. To this had to be added 7 to 8 kg of grain for sustenance en route, as well as ‘five or six pairs of homemade straw sandals to change on the way’. The strongest porters could carry 15 packs of tea, making a total load of around 150 kg (330 imperial pounds). ‘The grain lasted no longer than half the journey’, Li remembered, ‘and you had to replenish your food supply at your own expense’. As for the multiple pairs of straw sandals: ‘these would be worn out quickly, as the mountain path was extremely rough’.
To make the portage of such heavy loads possible, and to help guard against the ever-present danger of overbalancing and falling into one of the many deep ravines skirted by the narrow mountain trail, tea porters carried iron-tipped T-shaped walking sticks both to assist in struggling over the steep, rocky path, and to rest the load on, without taking it off their backs, when they paused for breath. A surviving section of the old stone path near Ganxipo Village bears testament to the almost unimaginable difficulties faced by the tea porters in the past; small holes dot the stone slabs of the path at regular intervals of a pace or so, indicating where, over centuries and perhaps even millennia, the porters struck the rock with their iron-tipped sticks as they made their laborious way to and from Kangding.
It is possible to identify the T-shaped walking-and-support sticks used by the tea porters in black and white photographs from a century or more ago, including one taken by the American explorer and botanist E.H. Wilson, who helpfully appends the information: ‘Western Szechuan; men laden with “brick tea” for Thibet. One man’s load weighs 317 lbs [144 kilos], the other’s 298 lbs [135 kilos]. Men carry this tea as far as Tachien-lu [Kangding] accomplishing about six miles per day over vile roads. Altitude 5,000 ft [1,500m] July 30, 1908’.
For the tea porters of Ganxipo Village, the hardest part of their journey was the climb over Erlang Shan. The precipitous mountain trail was so narrow that it was only wide enough for one person to pass at a time. According to Li Zhongquan: ‘one misstep, and you were gone – we had our sandals soled with iron to get over the mountain’. Li also remembers when: ‘one of us was sick and fell dead on the mountain top in winter. We had to leave him there until the snow thawed in spring, when we carried the body down home’. The porters carried tea from Tianquan to Kangding, and returned with loads of medicinal herbs (especially Cordyceps sinensis of Chinese caterpillar fungus), musk, wool, horn and other Tibetan products. The four porters interviewed in China Daily did not know for sure when the tea portage trade had started in Ganxipo, but Li was certain that ‘my grandpa’s grandpa was a porter as well,’ and that the whole village had offered porter services for generations."

Just walking for a few kilometers on a flat surface with 40 Kg worth of material on your back, I can attest is already exhausting. To imagine tripling that weight, walk for over 180 kilometers over mountain trails, and breathe rarefied air? I wouldn’t say it’s downright impossible, but highly improbable. I too, would agree that it was likely only exceptions rather than the rule.
Question by Cecil T: Are people from Mexico the hardest working people on the planet?
I get awful tired of hearing how illegal aliens are doing work that Americans “won’t do.”
Can it be asserted that illegal aliens are doing work that LEGAL IMMIGRANTS won’t do ?
I am sure that Mexico is not the only third-world country on this planet.
I am sure that Mexico is not the only third-world country on this planet that has economically desperate people who are willing to do the hardest and dirtiest work possible in order to come to a place that is not called AZTLAN, but is called the United States of America.
People from Mexico are some of the hardest working people I’ve ever had the privelege to work with, but they hardly have a monopoly on hard work.
The United States has been built by the blood, sweat, and tears of people from all over this planet including the ones who were already here in the first place!
I get real tired of Mexicans who promote the bogus idea that they are the only ones willing to do hard work.
If this were true, then how did we build all of our great cities and extensive infrastructure without the help of Mexicans because their representation in our population during most of our history has been a relatively small percentage of our population and work-force.
I’m glad you admit that we are “in a crappy situation”
Mutually crappy!
The high abortion rate in this country, along with the already too low birth rate has left us in a heavy deficit situation when it comes to sufficient labor for the amount of jobs generated by our healthy and expanding economy.
Our immigration bureaucracy has not been keeping up with demand for labor in all sectors of our economy.
The problem with illegal immigration from Mexico is that one out of every twelve has a criminal record!
Look closely at the figures when it comes to how many illegals PRIMARILY from Mexico are ending up in the jails and prisons throughout the country, but especially in the border states.
Don’t tell me these Mexicans aren’t a burden to the American taxpayers and an ever-present menace overall!
What about the ones who are over here and up to no good, but haven’t been caught yet?
12 U.S. citizens are MURDERED every day by illegal aliens primarily from Mexico! CRAPPY !

Nope, Americans are, look at what we built in 200+ years.

Today marks the ninth interest rate rise in a row, the fifth since Mr Howard promised to keep them at record lows. Mr Howard says that “working families in Australia have never been better off”. Here Kevin Rudd talks about his economically conservative approach to managing the economy with a vision for the next ten years, rather than the next ten weeks.

Im a upcoming junior in high school and I have a part time job at Kmart for the summer. But being that I’m a junior I have allot of more hard working to do in high school including the high school graduation test, SAT, and ACT, and fun school events. Now would it be smart for me to continue my summer job through school or does education come first in this situation?.

Education does come first, but it is possible to work a part time job without neglecting your education. It’s been done many times before. Through careful planning, you should be able to work and go to school. It’s not that hard.
